PREVENTION
ON JOB CENTERS
CEDRO operates on work centers,
both with the workers as well with the families, being a
firm believer that a drug-free work area will be more efficient
and effective in its processes.
Drug abuse in work centers favors accidents and promotes
absenteeism and conflicts.
The International Work
Organization has mentioned some numbers regarding these
consequences:
* According to the International
Work Organization there are world wide more than 50 million
of people disabled due to alcohol and other drugs abuse.
* On-the-job accidents related
to alcohol and other drugs abuse cause the following:
From 2 to 4 more on-the-job accidents than in other workers
From 15 to 30 % more of total accidents
From 20 to 25 % affecting intoxicated individuals
* Absenteeism registered
among workers abusing is the following:
From 2 to 3 times greater than in the rest of workers
Also, a greater number of unjustified absenteeism is registered,
delays, getting out before time, taking more time during
lunch hour and coffee breaks.
* There is a considerable
reduction on performance on workers having drug abuse problems,
and it shows:
More difficulties for teamwork, less concentration on the
job and less quality of work, greater personnel rotation
with the loss of experience and training
* Disciplinary sanctions
on drug-abuse workers are:
From15 to 40 % of total sanctions
* Insurance expenses double
and/or triple for health insurance
* The following are other
problems on-the-job site:
Greater number of conflicts with fellow workers and bosses
Expenses for repair of tools, machinery and equipment.
Expenses for work materials
Unpleasant work environment: The International Work Organization
declares that even though drug abuse workers are not more
than 10% of the working force, the provoke 80% of personnel
problems
* For the affected worker
it represents:
Physical and psychological problems
Family conflicts
Work instability
Low performance
Legal problems
Unemployment
WHY ON THE COMPANY PREVENTION PROGRAM?
* Because it has been proven
that the work place is the best environment for prevention
activities, due to the fact that it is the place where people
stay more time.
* Because when affirmative
and personal development processes are stimulated for drug
abuse prevention within the culture of the company, the
workers commit themselves to participate completely with
the purposes of the company.
* Because the link between
physical and mental well being of the workers increases
productivity.
* Because prevention activities
provide services to a greater number of workers and with
a lesser cost, compared to treatment that costs more and
benefits a lesser number of workers.
* Because a company having
a prevention program expects the following:
- Decrease in absenteeism
- Decrease in accidents
- Increased productivity
- Improvement of work environment
- Decrease in materials and equipment deterioration
- Decrease in personnel rotation and layoffs and compensation
payments
* The International Consortium
on Drug Abuse at the Work Place declares that in Spain for
each euro invested saved in a prevention program between
5 to 15 euros are saved.
STRATEGIES:
The prevention program on
the work place understands the worker as "someone who
establishes a series of professional, family and social
relationships" that is why intervention is addressed
to promotion and development of those places where the worker
interacts.
The program's objective is
the following:
· The social and personal
development of workers and not only to reduce the problems
related to drug abuse.
· Promote changes
on life-styles by means of different education, cultural
and recreational activities..
· Foster activities
and environments where drug abuse is incompatible with work
and well-being.
