EDUCATIONAL
COMMUNITY
Prevalence studies conducted
with elementary school children prove that the starting
age of legal drug use is getting lower; the current age
is 9. Likewise, the consumption of legal and illegal drugs
among high school adolescents has also increased. A variety
of factors including personal, social, family or educational
aspects have contributed to this situation.
With regards to education,
the school must apply prevention policies to guarantee the
integral development of the students, offering drug abuse
prevention programs that can be transversely developed throughout
the curricula, the school year and the different grades.
The contents should refer to specific and unspecific factors
related to drug abuse. It is important that the teachers
be trained and have all the work materials required for
their job.
On the other hand, it is
necessary to involve parents or the nearest of kin, in the
school's prevention effort, to maximize the efficacy of
this endeavor. Families facing crises may become dysfunctional
or problematic, causing their members to become vulnerable
to drug abuse. But then again, the family is an agent of
change, and, thus, an indispensable intervention group.
The Program also expresses
the need to train of teachers and promoters in the application
of conceptual and preventive methodological tools to conduct
preventive programs and activities with the students, their
families and the community as a whole.
