Communications

The main objective of the communication component is to help in the coca leaf eradication processes and to promote the benefits of sustainable development by using conventional and alternative massive media with the participation of the population.
The socio-cultural characteristics of the different groups involved are taken into account. Quechua speaking populations and others are included. It is necessary to support the activities of other institutions and programs that within the common objective of sustainable development provide the messages promoting healthy life-styles without including coca activities.
In urban areas school newsletters are prioritize in order to create awareness among adolescents, on the advantages of legality and the fight against drugs. It has to be highlighted that this component is coordinated with DEVIDA, USAID and Chemonics.

ACTIVITIES

1. Media Campaigns:

Nationwide and local communication campaigns that include an integral vision of the negative consequences associated to drug abuse are developed. Specifically, the transmission of messages related to the achievements obtained by the Development Alternative National Program; the risks related to drug-chain activities and alleged benefits obtained by coca, thus contributing to sensitize populations before the implementation of voluntary eradication activities.

1.1 School Journalists against drug abuse

This new strategy in the coca producing valleys of Peru has had great success in countries such as Colombia, Spain, and Lima capital city.
In less than 10 months, more than 500 adolescents have participated as school journalists, whose objective is to make school adolescents participate in citizen's legal activities, as opinion leaders, and circulation of information in favor of legality and social development.

The work strategy is focused on establishing in each urban and rural school, student press teams that by means of the radio, television or press send messages in favor of the objectives mentioned above.

All this within the framework of freedom of speech and respect for the opinion of the same adolescents and that are also being respected, channeled through workshops and training.

2. Interpersonal communication by means of alternative media

It has to be accepted that the cultural values of the communities have an important role in communications addressed to behavior changes. The purpose is to know what are the opinion, interests, and problems of the different sectors of society, both their peer group and the community in general. Consolidate a bi-directional channel of communications, not a vertical one. That way, there is a possibility to adopt and maintain positive behavior when the people of the same cultural environment participate in the transformation process.

2.1 Information Fairs

These are meetings in the city squares of urban or rural areas considered by the project; where by means of games, video Forum and Saturday and Sunday debates, the communities discuss their most important problems. School journalists have an important role in these activities.

2.2 Pasacalles (Parade)

These are public expressions against drug abuse, where children, adolescents and the population in general participate with costumes chosen by the community; school journalists also have an important role in this activity.
